We would like to extend a hearty congratulations to Fisher Transport Limited for being awarded the 2016 Family Enterprise of the Year by the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise (CAFE) Nova Scotia.
This award, sponsored by BMO Financial Group, is granted by CAFE NS in recognition of “significant achievement made within a family enterprise.” Having won the award in Nova Scotia, Fisher Transport was entered into the national Family Enterprise of the Year Award competition put on by CAFE Canada where they have been recognized as a finalist. The National Prize will be awarded on May 17th in Calgary at CAFE’s National Symposium.
Fisher Transport, which was first launched in 1962, is located in Shubenacadie and has been owned and operated by Ken MacDonald and his family for the past 23 years.
In talking to Ken, one learns that he initially operated the business while still working full-time as a CFO for a mining company. In 2011, his son Jordan came on board as General Manager.
“I wanted to make sure my kids didn’t get a free ride, though,” explains Ken. “Businesses fail, or people decide they want to do other things. I wanted to make sure that my kids had a good education, so that if things didn’t work out here, they would be okay.”
The business, however, is doing much more than okay. It’s growing steadily, mostly due to an exemplary reputation and the power of word-of-mouth. And that suits Ken just perfectly:
“To go to work and do what you love, while getting to work with your kids —it’s just amazing. We achieve success together and we celebrate together. There’s no greater feeling.”
The partners and staff at WBLI would like to again congratulate Ken, Pam, and their family on this well-deserved award, and wish them every success in the years to come.
